Dr. Jennifer Doudna and her research team at UC Berkeley’s Innovative Genomics Institute have expanded into AI-powered protein design, introducing a new strategy for generating non-natural, custom gene-editing tools. Published in Science, their study leverages inverse AI modeling to design novel synthetic versions of TnpB, a compact evolutionary ancestor of CRISPR-Cas systems, capable of binding to and cutting targeted DNA in human, plant, and bacterial cells.
